The Sanctuary of Truth

A 105-metre building carved entirely from wood on the Naklua seafront, under construction since 1981 and still unfinished: Pattaya’s one genuinely world-class sight.

The Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is not a temple, although it looks like one. It is a privately built wooden monument on a headland at Naklua, started in 1981 by the businessman Lek Viriyaphan and still being carved today by a workforce of woodcarvers you can watch at work. Every surface of its 105-metre structure is teak and other hardwoods joined without metal nails, covered in figures from Buddhist, Hindu and Thai mythology. It is the one place in Pattaya that stops people who have seen Angkor and Ayutthaya, and it earns its 500 THB entry.

What you are looking at

The Sanctuary is a single enormous hall with four wings, each dedicated to a different philosophy: Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Indian art and belief, with carvings representing the elements, the planets, parents, teachers and the cycle of life. The scale only registers when you stand under the central spire, which rises about 105 metres above the sea. Because the building is still being carved, you enter wearing a hard hat and will usually see craftsmen working on panels at ground level, which is as interesting as the finished work. The wood is left unpainted and weathers to silver on the seaward side, so photographs change completely with the time of day.

Tickets, hours and the sunset session

Daytime entry is 500 THB for adults, with children at roughly half price, and includes a guided round in English that starts every half hour or so; join it, because the symbolism is impossible to decode alone. The park opens at 08:00 and the quietest, coolest hour is the first. A separate evening session from about 18:20 to 20:30 costs 700 THB and includes a Thai dance performance; it is worth it for the lighting and the cooler air, less so if you only want to see the carvings closely. Online tickets through booking platforms run slightly below the gate price and skip the queue; our Sanctuary of Truth tour page compares them. Extras on the grounds such as horse carriages, elephant rides and the speedboat ride are paid separately, and we recommend skipping the elephant rides.

Getting there and combining it

The Sanctuary sits on the shore at the end of Naklua Soi 12, in the northern part of the city. A Bolt or Grab from central Pattaya takes 15–20 minutes and costs 100–150 THB; from Jomtien allow 30 minutes. The cheaper route is a songthaew up Naklua Road, then a 10-minute walk down the soi. It pairs naturally with Wong Amat Beach and Naklua fish market, both within 2 km, and with the Big Buddha and Pratumnak viewpoint on a half-day city tour.

Is it worth it?

Yes, without qualification. Among Pattaya’s paid attractions this is the only one that would draw visitors in its own right anywhere in the world. Allow two to three hours, go early or for the sunset session, take the guided round, and do not rush the seaward terrace at the end.
