Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai)

An 18-metre golden seated Buddha on Pratumnak Hill, reached by a naga-flanked staircase — free, active and the best cultural stop inside the city.

Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai)

Wat Phra Yai — the Big Buddha Temple — crowns Pratumnak Hill between Pattaya and Jomtien, and its roughly 18-metre golden seated Buddha is the largest in the region and visible from much of the bay. Unlike some attractions in this city, it is exactly what it appears to be: a working Buddhist temple where locals come to pray, monks give blessings and the tourist trade stays at the gate.

You climb a broad staircase flanked by two long seven-headed naga serpents — the classic photo looking back down over the city — and arrive at a terrace ringed by smaller Buddha images in different postures, one for each day of the week. Thais traditionally make merit at the image matching the day they were born. The main Buddha, in the Mara-subduing posture, sits above it all against the sky; go in the morning for the best light on the gold and the least heat on the marble underfoot.

Entry is free, though donations are welcome and fund the temple’s upkeep. This is an active religious site, so dress accordingly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off where signed, and give worshippers space at the shrines. Vendors at the base sell caged birds "for release" — a practice conservationists discourage, since the birds are trapped precisely to be sold; you can politely decline.

The temple pairs naturally with the Pattaya City Viewpoint five minutes away on the same hill, and together they make the best free half-morning in the city. A songthaew or Bolt from Beach Road takes about ten minutes; walking up from the Jomtien side is possible but steep in the heat. Most city tours, including our private highlights tour, combine both stops with the Sanctuary of Truth for a half-day that shows a completely different Pattaya from the one on the postcards — or the barstools.
