This is Pattaya’s most notorious scam and it has run for years on Pattaya Beach and, at times, on Koh Larn. The mechanics: you rent a jet-ski with a cursory handover; on return, the operator "discovers" scratches or a cracked hull — damage that was there all along or is cosmetically staged — and demands compensation that can start at 5,000 THB and escalate to 50,000+ THB, sometimes with intimidating friends materialising and your passport or deposit as leverage. Defences, in order of effectiveness: simply do not rent jet-skis from beach operators — parasailing and banana boats do not carry the same racket; if you must ride, video the entire machine slowly, including the hull underside and engine cover, with the operator visibly in frame, before touching the water; never hand over your passport as deposit; and if a claim happens anyway, do not pay on the beach — insist on the Tourist Police (1155). Officers attend quickly in this exact scenario, and inflated claims tend to shrink dramatically the moment they arrive.
