Jomtien Beach

The long, calmer beach over the hill from Pattaya proper — better sand, better swimming, and where families and long-stay visitors actually go.

Jomtien Beach

Jomtien is the roughly six-kilometre beach on the far side of Pratumnak Hill from Pattaya Bay, and for actual beach time it beats Pattaya Beach comfortably: the sand strip is wider, the water is cleaner (the city’s post-2010s wastewater improvements helped both bays, but Jomtien benefited most), and the atmosphere is set by families, retirees and long-stay visitors rather than bar crawlers. If your Pattaya plan involves swimming rather than people-watching, stay or spend your days here.

The northern end near Dongtan Beach is the busiest and most serviced, with rentable loungers and umbrellas in classic rows — typically 50–100 THB per item per day, often waived if you order food — and vendors working the sand with grilled prawns, som tam and cold drinks. Dongtan itself is Pattaya’s well-established gay beach, relaxed and mixed in practice. Heading south the crowds thin steadily, and the last kilometres toward Na Jomtien are quiet even in high season.

Jomtien is also the area’s watersports hub: it hosts jet-ski and banana-boat operators (agree prices and photograph the machine before riding — jet-ski damage scams are a documented Pattaya problem, and that one sentence can save you 10,000 THB), and the steadier winds from roughly November to March make the southern end a modest windsurfing and kitesurfing spot with a couple of long-running schools.

The beachfront road hosts a lively night market scene around Soi 5–7 in the evenings, and the seafood restaurants at the Na Jomtien end are where Thai weekenders eat, which tells you something. Getting here from central Pattaya is easy: the dark-blue songthaew route runs over the hill for 10–20 THB, or a Bolt costs about 100–150 THB. Most island and water-park tours, including our Koh Larn trips, pick up from Jomtien hotels as standard.
